Bear hunt for 2007 - We had a
great season, once again, at Kitchi Island Outposts. We hosted 3 hunting
parties, a total of 8 black bear hunters. Our success rate was 85% with
respectable bears harvested all around.
Our first party in late May, from Minnesota, was a father, son, and uncle combination.
These fellows regularly hunt and fish together and were right at home at Longhaul Lake Outpost.
We hunted in the evenings from about 5 PM to dark. This party harvested 2 black bears, both
hunters pleased with their bears. One party member was ill during his hunt and although he
tried desperately to sit in a ground stand, he found it was a fruitless effort. Adam, Greg
and the guides made a couple of exploratory journeys far up river to areas where few others
have ever been before. We explored Big Moose Falls, Ogasi Lake, Long Lake and all the water
between and enjoyed the wilderness together. The shore lunches at Big Moose and Little Moose
were exceptional. Adam is back working with the US Postal Service, Greg is selling real-estate
and John is enjoying his retirement.

The second hunting party we hosted was from North Dakota. These physicians joined Brian and me
at Kitchi Island Outpost in early June. Scott, Mike and Doug seemed to unwind as the week matured.
The stressful environment they came from was soon put on the back burner and the wilderness and
the activities helped them to relax. This party spent a lot of their time exploring the area and
diligently fishing. Brian and I joined them a couple of time to fish and do a shore lunch at
Atawayne Falls. Scott and Mike were successful harvesting black bears and were both pleased with
their animals.

Our third party was a group of 2 hunters and 2 fishermen from Nebraska. These fellows flew to
Matheson Island in a private airplane and then flew into camp with us to Kitchi Island Outpost
in mid June. Both Stan and James were successful in taking respectable black bears within the
first 3 days. James actually shot his bear on the second evening before Brian had returned to
camp from dropping him off at his bait site. Roger and Lou and the others caught plenty of fish
and had a friendly fishing tournament ongoing in camp. We actually had Conservation Services drop
in out of the sky and check our fishing licenses! Although we had a few days of rain, their spirit
was not dampened; they were good sports and fun to be with, the teasing seldom stopped!
| I am pleased with the quality of the black bear hunt that we are
providing here at Kitchi. I am also aware that the black bear resource will not last for
ever and must be managed properly. At Kitchi, we will not over-hunt the areas in our allocation.

Thanks to those who attended the camps this past season. I look forward to meeting and hosting
my hunting parties for 2008.
Thanks for dropping by.
